Supongamos que una vez terminado el ensayo clínico en el que comparamos la eficacia de los medicamentos A y B, obtenemos una tasa de respuesta del 50% con A y del 45% con B. Realizada la correspondiente prueba estadística, resulta que A es mejor que B, con una p < 0,05 y un IC 95% = 2,5 al 9%. ¿Qué es lo que esto significa? El principal objetivo de las pruebas estadísticas es responder a la pregunta ¿cuál es la probabilidad de que la diferencia observada se deba al azar? 1,2.
Una p < 0,05 indica que en menos de cinco veces de cada 100 que repitiéramos el mismo estudio, nuestro resultado se debería al azar. Una p significativa indica que existe una gran diferencia de efectividad entre ambos fármacos, o bien que la muestra estudiada es tan grande que hemos conseguido detectar una diferencia real, pero pequeña2. Debe advertirse que la significación estadística a partir de p < 0,05 es un convencionalismo, siendo también de interés la información que se obtiene de los resultados con una p algo mayor que 0,05. Cuanto mayor sea la p, más fuerte será la evidencia a favor de la hipótesis nula 1.
A veces surge la duda de si debemos elegir una p con una o con 2 colas. La respuesta es simple: puede calcularse con una cola siempre y cuando consideremos que el medicamento A nunca podrá ser peor que el fármaco de referencia (p. ej., un placebo). Sin embargo, incluso en la comparación de un fármaco activo con placebo, cabe la posibilidad de que se produzca un resultado falso negativo (que no se hallen diferencias frente al placebo). Esto es más
frecuente cuando la variable medida incluye criterios subjetivos, por ejemplo en la depresión psíquica, o cuando la muestra estudiada es pequeña 3. Por tanto, generalmente es conveniente elegir una p con 2 colas (A puede ser mejor o peor que B). Esta decisión es importante, ya que una p = 0,04 con una cola es estadísticamente significativa, mientras que la equivalente con 2 colas (p = 0,08) no lo sería.

Suppose that, having concluded a clinical trial which compared the effectiveness of drugs A and B, we had seen a response rate of 50% with A and 45% with B. On carrying-out the appropriate statistical test, it emerges that A is better than B, with p < 0.05 and a 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 2.5% to 9%. What does this mean? The main objective of statistical tests is to answer the question "What is the probability that the observed difference is due to chance?" [1, 2].
A p < 0.05 indicates that if we repeated the same study 100 times, in less than five cases out of that 100 would our result be due to chance. A significant p indicates either that there is a large difference in effectiveness between the two drugs, or that the sample is so great that we have managed to detect a real, although small, difference. It should be noted that a result being statistically significant if p < 0.05 is merely a convention, the information deriving from results with p slightly larger than 0.05 is also of interest. The higher the p, the stronger the evidence for the null hypothesis [1].
Sometimes the question arises whether we should choose a one- or two-tailed p value. The answer is simple: we may carry-out a one-tailed calculation as long as we believe that drug A will never be worse than the reference drug e.g., a placebo). However, even in comparing an active drug with a placebo, it is possible to arrive at a false negative result (i.e. that it not different from placebo). This happens more frequently when the measured variable includes subjective criteria, such as in the case of depression, or when the sample is small [3]. Hence, it is generally advisable to choose a two-tailed p (A may be better or worse than B). This is important, since a one-tailed test with p = 0.04 is statistically significant, whereas the equivalent two-tailed test (p = 0.08) would not be.
The difference found between two treatments may be statistically significant, yet be of no clinical relevance. Clinical relevance is a subjective and pragmatic assessment of the real importance of the observed difference for clinical practice. For example, suppose we compare the gastrointestinal tolerance of two anti-inflammatory drugs, A and B, and observe that A did not produce gastric disturbances in 90 out of every 100 patients treated and that B was, likewise, well-tolerated in 93 out of every 100 patients treated, although this difference might be statistically significant (p < 0.05) it clearly seems not to be clinically relevant [2]. Statistical precision is the inverse of the variance (higher accuracy, lower variance) and increases with increasing sample size. One way of measuring accuracy is by means of the CI. The wider the CI, lower the precision; there is less confidence that the result has not arisen purely due to chance and may be attributed to the population [2].

El infinito como cantidad tiene dos interpretaciones: la analítica y la sintética. En estas notas centraremos la atención en la versión analítica debida al matemático Abraham Robinson (~ 1950); la versión sintética, originada en los trabajos de William Lawvere (~ 1963), por razones de espacio, no será presentada en este trabajo.
El infinito cantidad fue explicado por la teoría conocida con el nombre de 'Análisis no estándar' desarrollada, en sus elementos básicos, por el matemático Abraham Robinson. Esta teoría tuvo antecedentes, muy importantes, en la obra pionera de Leopoldo Lówenheim y Thoralf Skolem; estos matemáticos desarrollaron una teoría de conjuntos no estándar, que con el tiempo se ha venido convirtiendo, después de la obra de Paul Cohen, en una herramienta importante de la teoría de conjuntos.
El aporte de Robinson se basa en una propiedad fundamental de los lenguajes de primer orden: son compactos. Esto ultimo significa lo siguiente: Un conjunto T de sentencias en un lenguaje de primer orden LT es consistente (es decir tiene un modelo), si y solamente si toda parte finita de T tiene un modelo. ('Primer orden' significa que cuantificamos sobre variables que se refieren a individuos (no a subconjuntos) de un dominio dado; 'compacidad' vale en primer orden con cuantificación finitística).
Apliquemos este teorema a la teoría de primer orden de los números reales incrementada por las proposiciones
0 < ς < 1/n, n = 1,2, ... donde ς es un símbolo nuevo. Más explícitamente, consideremos el lenguaje de primer orden en el cual se cuenta con un símbolo por cada número real, uno por cada función y uno por cada relación. En este lenguaje escogemos todas las sentencias a que son verdaderas en R cuando se interpreta cada símbolo como el objeto correspondiente. Llamamos T(R) al conjunto de estas sentencias. A continuación escogemos un símbolo de constante c; y consideremos la teoría T como la reunión de T(R) con el conjunto de sentencias {0 < ς < 1/n, n є N}.
Esta teoría T es consistente pues cualquier subconjunto finito de T se verifica en R. SUMMARY. We present a proposal for a method of treating the words 'infinite' and 'number' mathematically, distinguishing between two qualitatively different situations: the uncountable and the countable.

Countable Infinity has two interpretations: the analytic and synthetic [TN: More commonly, the "non-constructive" and the "intuitionistic"]. In this paper, we will focus on the analytic version due to the mathematician Abraham Robinson (~ 1950); the synthetic version originating in the works of William Lawvere (~ 1963) will, for reasons of space, be omitted.
Countable Infinity was explained by the theory known as 'Non-standard analysis', developed in its basic elements, by the mathematician Abraham Robinson [TN: His 1996 "Non-standard analysis" gives a rigorous derivation of infinitely large numbers]. This theory had deep roots in the pioneering work of Leopold Lówenheim and Thoralf Skolem, mathematicians who developed a non-standard set theory, which over time has been converted, following the work of Paul Cohen, into an important tool of set theory.
Robinson's contribution is based on a fundamental property of first-order languages: they are compact. This implies that a set T of sentences, in a first-order language LT, is consistent (i.e. has a model), if and only if, every finite part of T has a model. ('first-order' means that quantified variables refer to elements (not subsets) of a given domain, 'compactness' is a cornerstone of first order finitistic quantification).
Let us apply this theorem to the first-order theory of real numbers augmented by the propositions 0 < ς < 1/n, n = 1,2, ... where ς is a new symbol. More explicitly, consider that first-order language which has a symbol for every real number, one for each function and one for each relationship. In this language, we select all sentences which are true in R when one interprets each symbol as the corresponding object. Let us call T(R) the set of these sentences. In the following, we choose a constant symbol ς, and consider the theory T as the collection of T(R) together with the set of statements {0 < ς < 1/n, n є N}.
The theory T is consistent because any finite subset of T has a model in R. Hence, there exists a set R* (known as the hyperreal domain [TN: The hyperreals, in the sense of Kanovei and Shelah's "A definable nonstandard model of the reals"]) in which all the symbols of T are interpreted and all sentences of T are true with this interpretation; this set can not be R because because that contains no infinitely small quantities [TN: infinitesimals].
In R* one interprets all the symbols of T, therefore, one also interprets all the symbols of T(R) and the constant ς. Now, for each real number, for each real function, and for each real relationship, there is a symbol in the language of T(R) so R* contains objects of the same nature which interpret them. Thus, in R* there exists an element for each real number and a relationship for each real relationship, preserving their respective arities.
All these elements are annotated with the same symbol with which they are annotated in R. Thus, if e is the name of a real number (Euler's number), this will also be the name of the corresponding element of R*; if < is the name of the strict binary relation in R, this will also be the name of the corresponding binary relation in R*. In fact, the sentence:
∀x∀y∀z(x < y ∧ y < z ⇒ x < z)
is true in R and, hence, belongs to T(R), which implies that the corresponding relation in R* also satisfies this sentence.

In fact, it seems to me that the original idea of ProZ as a community is long gone, so I don't expect to be participating much in the future.
Despite that, for quite some time I expect to remain the leading responder in Mathematics & Statistics with over 1700 ProZ points. Note the link is a little slow as it gathers totals across all language pairs (not merely Abkhazian to Abkhazian!)
