Речь идёт о каком-то древнегреческом музыкальном инструменте:
"Ovid, Metamorphoses 4. 25 ff :
"You [Dionysos] drive your pair of lynxes with bright coloured reigns. Bacchae and Satyri (Satyrs) are your followers, and that old drunkard [Seilenos (Silenus)] whose stout staff supports his tottering steps... Интересно, что перевод с греческого этот вероятнее всего на старом английском, и сочетание pipes of box встречается только в старых английских источниках - попробуйте поискать. Поэтому не факт, что это были именно флейты, но как их называли? Но действительно не пан-флейты, поскольку long-bored pipes
