neutral Tony M : I think it's unlikely to be a 'ridge', as it is described as being part of a 'plateau'. I'd try 'rocky overhang' or 'overhanging rocky cliffs' etc.

yes, I actually offered "overhang of rock" initially as "corniche" on its own but with plateau "scarp" or "escarpment" :a long, steep slope, especially one at the edge of a plateau ....

'..under the steep wooded edge of the plateau'.
Given the context in conjunction with 'beneath' and 'plateau' I think that 'steep (wooded) edge' works here. A plateau being a raised area of flat terrain, the 'edge' is already going to have the sense of a drop-off but it needs 'steep' to give the full sense of 'corniche'. I think 'cliff' is harder to work in smoothly.
