Je cherche à traduire " beat the breath out of" dans la phrase "When the chance to seize the disputed town of Erbil came up - the government in Baghdad was eager to keep it within its sphere of control - the Kurds beat the breath out of IS."
Sachant qu'il s'agit d'un article de presse, je cherche une traduction qui ne soit pas trop familière dans sa formulation.
Je pensais à "couper l'herbe sous le pied", mais cela me semble un peu trop léger par rapport au sens et un peu familier.

I suppose this literal meaning might be a bit of an exaggeration in the given context (presumably they didn't succeed in totally wiping them all out!) — but I do think the connotation is important when it comes to translating it. Many of the suggestions below seem to me a little weak compared with the force of the original.
