l’écrin box, case Explanation: If you go back 5 pages from where you are, you'll find (and must surely have seen and translated) boîte à rubans, subsequently referred to as just boîte two lines ahead of écrin. Given the antics these ribbons get up to in the intervening pages, I tend to see the 'box' more as one of those baskets snake charmers charm cobras out of, but that is by-the-bye. If you want to avoid repetition of 'box' (or whatever you have used previously), you could say 'case' maybe, like the écrin rings, collector coins, etc. come in. In this house, however, my ribbon box (I'm one of those hoarders who prefers to keep ribbons from the family's Christmas and birthday presents, hampers of French wines and delicacies, etc. rather than throw them away; you never know when they will come in handy ... and they DO) is actually one of those cardboard L'Occitane toiletries boxes. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 44 mins (2024-03-28 22:27:04 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 51 mins (2024-03-28 22:33:50 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Claquement funeste suggests that the box/case is made of wood, at least something solid and heavy enough to make a noise when the lid is released, unless it is spring-loaded like those velvet-covered plastic boxes. Definitely not a cardboard L'Occitane box. |
