Urgency is in the eye of the beholder May 17, 2023

In my book, an urgent job is an assignment that requires me to work extra hours, at night or over the weekend.
My workload decides when an urgency charge (+50%) is called for.

Philippe

Something else May 17, 2023

It depends (I don’t have a fixed rate for rush jobs)! I don't apply a surcharge rate to some of my regular clients, but if it's a new client or one that gives me work once in a blue moon, I will increase my rate for sure (how much it will depend entirely on the job). I have a long-standing client, who very regularly requests (every week or even every day) small but urgent translations (never on Fridays) and we agreed some time ago that I would give priority to his work and invoice accordingly.

No extra charge May 17, 2023

I'm available or I'm not available. I won't be suddenly available because a client offers me a higher rate.

But if I'm being offered an urgency rate spontaneously, I won't say no.

Nothing extra May 17, 2023

Either I have time or I don't,
But some clients offer extra e.g. 10% then I'll take that.

Urgency is about work intensity, not just the turnaround time May 17, 2023

If I am asked to deliver 200 words within 1 hour and I am not busy with something else, there will be no surcharge.
If I am asked to deliver 20000 words within 2 days and I feel I am able to handle it (that is, the subject field is well-familiar, the text is well-readable and I am well-rested and can skip a night of sleep), I will ask for a 100% surcharge.

50-100% May 17, 2023

50% for urgent work of reasonable volume during business days, 100% during weekends/holidays and/or larger volumes with short deadlines.

One of my regular clients offers a surcharge without asking, we made an agreement on this in the past.

Depends May 17, 2023

I'm with the others.
If I have capacity to do it in normal working hours, I'll do it without any extra charge.
If I don't have capacity, I'll charge 100% extra for any evening/weekend work involved. Or more likely tell them they'll have to wait. And they normally do.

With rare exceptions, I don't accept jobs that require delivery in less than 24 hours. I tell the client, truthfully, that such a short turnaround doesn't allow sufficient time for my quality control procedures.

Nothing if I can fit it in seamlessly.

25% extra if I can rearrange my work and fit it in (I meant to charge 30% but it was harder to calculate in my head).

50% extra if I have to work outside the hours I'm prepared to work normally.

If "less than 24hrs" means I don't get any shut-eye between draft and proof, I tell them that the quality will only scrape through at "just about fit for purpose" level rather than the excellence I aspire to usually. They say y

They say you can only pick two out of cheap fast and good, but I don't do cheap, and you have to pick fast or good, both is not possible.

That's what two of my main clients pay.
