Dutch term

krachtplek

Dutch to English Art/Literary Geography also Folklore
Hi all,

I'm translating some text for a museum website and it's all about 'krachtplekken'.
The easy translation would be: power place, place of power
But I'm wondering if there is a more-or-less official term in English for this?

Thanks,
Laurie

To all:
I have closed without giving Kudo's because the answer I went with was given by writeaway as a reference comment and not as a proposed translation. Thanks to all of you for your contributions. All are useful in certain situations.
philgoddard Nov 3, 2022:
Thanks In that case, I think writeaway has answered your question.
Laurie Schiet-Heath (asker) Nov 3, 2022:
context Both 'krachtplek' en 'krachtplaats' seem to be used interchangeably:

philgoddard Nov 3, 2022:
Could we have the context, please We need one or more sentences containing the word.

(magically) charged space; place with (a) special energy; liminal space

Here are a few options that might work in your context!

• place with (a) special energy
• high energy spot/place
• (magically) charged space
• liminal space (slightly different meaning, but potentially also interesting in this context)

see e.g.:

"As is intimated by 'Magic Show', co-curated by artist Jonathan Allen [a practising magician and member of The Magic Circle] and critic and curator Sally O'Reilly, both art and magic are concerned with manipulating perception, with the theatrics of suggestion and the leveraging of confidence. Do we really believe that an ii-inch spherical space above Tom Friedman's Untitled [A Curse], 1992, contains a curse placed there by a witch? [Or that the same artist really stared at a piece of paper for a thousand hours?] We try to. The 'it is because I say it is' provocation dates back to Duchamp at least; the charged space of the gallery, which transfigures what it contains, might be analogous to the ritual and razzmatazz of conjuring."

a few more options:

• place of power
• magical site/spot
• sacred site
Note from asker:
Liminal seems to be an intermediate phase in the energy-receiving process. I have use alternates such as 'place of power' but 'sacred site', according to the definition of sacred, would imply something purely religious and not simply ritual. Thanks for your input!

agree Barend van Zadelhoff : 'places with a special energy' https://tinyurl.com/3njxzctt for outsiders (mainstream people) and 'thin places' for insiders :-)

Ley Lines are believed to be supernatural in nature.
Wikipedia: Ley lines
... "members of the Earth Mysteries movement and other esoteric traditions have commonly believed that such ley lines demarcate "earth energies""
Wikipedia: earth energies a.k.a. energy (esotericism)
... Proponents and practitioners of various esoteric forms of spirituality and alternative medicine refer to a variety of claimed experiences and phenomena as being due to "energy" or "force" that defy measurement and thus are distinguished from the scientific form of energy.
Note from asker:
I did see this on Wikipedia, but it seemed to be more of a physical reference than spiritual. Thanks for your contribution, though!

energy site

Seems like this is a common term. Also seen it used in the context of museums. See ref.
Note from asker:
I had checked Linguee, of course, but saw a lot of 'power places' there.... not quite was I was looking for. Thanks for your input.

Note from asker:
Thanks!
I have used a combination of "place of energy", "energy-rich place", and "thin place", as in: energy-rich places (called “thin places” because they are locations where the line between the mortal and the eternal worlds is thin) Thanks to all who provided input!

agree philgoddard : If this is the context, "place of energy" might be more easily understandable.

WERELD KRACHTPLAATSEN

pockets of concentrated supernatural energy

To those who do believe in ley lines, the concept is quite simple. Ley lines are lines that crisscross around the globe, like latitudinal and longitudinal lines, that are dotted with monuments and natural landforms, and carry along with them rivers of supernatural energy. Along these lines, at the places they intersect, there are pockets of concentrated energy, that can be harnessed by certain individuals.

As for their supernatural component, the ley lines mystery deepens when it’s revealed what they connect. Along the ley lines lie the Great Pyramids of Giza, Chichen Itza, and Stonehenge, all wonders of the world that continue to surprise archaeologists today. Perhaps their presence on the ley lines, near to the so-called energy pockets could explain their inceptions, all of which defied the laws of architecture at the time.

Ley Lines and Why People Think They Hold Supernatural Energy

In 1921, the theory of ley lines was developed by Alfred Watkins, an amateur archaeologist.

Watkins theorized that there are lines of low-frequency energy all over the world that crisscross each other. Along these lines are monuments and natural landforms.

The sites, man-made and natural, all fell into this pattern along the ley lines.

Watkins believed that these lines carried supernatural energy and low-frequency vibrations. The sites that are on top of intersections carry pockets of concentrated energy.
