Spanish term

espectáculos bestiales

Spanish to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
This is actually from a text for an art show in Argentina. The text reflects on how human kill in so many different situations:

Se mata por deporte: caza deportiva, tauromaquia, espectáculos bestiales, herencias de circo con gladiadores.

Other than bullfighting (tauromaquia), I can't imagine what this might describe, Maybe chicken fights and dog fights??

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Marcelo González Feb 10, 2020:
@Yvonne If you like 'shows involving animals,' as you've just indicated, why not post it and see if the community agrees? That said, I think 'spectacles' (often used in a negative sense) might work better in this context.
Yvonne Gallagher Feb 8, 2020:
@ Asker probably best to use "shows involving animals" if you have no further context
Yvonne Gallagher Feb 8, 2020:
with Andy and Cecilia. These "shows" might be "fun" for some spectators but there is likely to be cruelty involved for the poor animals. However, without more context, impossible to say exactly what type of "show" this is.
Cecilia Gowar Feb 8, 2020:
Coming from Argentina I am sure they are not referring to animal shows, but rather to the many brutal events where animals are killed for fun, like the ¨toro embolado¨or the killing of whales in Denmark.
liz askew Feb 8, 2020:
Mind you it does say "se mata por deporte"! so maybe not.
liz askew Feb 8, 2020:
see:
https://www.ultimahora.es/noticias/local/2003/09/25/702789/u...

seems to be just a show with animals
neilmac Feb 8, 2020:
To me It suggests "shows involving cruelty to animals", which covers both cock and dog fighting (etc.) and circus animal acts, but that is too explicit and doesn't really flow.
Marcelo González Feb 8, 2020:
Thanks, Andy, for the kind words.

What nudges me in this direction is the author's use of the colon, after which the short list, including what would be three usually death-culminating activities (for lack of a better word), beginning with sport hunting (think: elephants, tigers, etc) and bull fighting. Since competitive animal fights usually end in death as well, it seems to fit. That said, I do see your point, Andy. And thanks again :-)
Andy Watkinson Feb 8, 2020:
Marcelo offers an excellent suggestion, as usual, but I'm not convinced it's necessarily competitive fights which are being referred to here.

i.e. I'm thinking of the cruelty inflicted on performing monkeys, the famously tortured dancing bears, etc...maybe the author was casting his net a bit wider...just a suggestion.

competitive animal fights // animal fighting/fighting animal shows

A general term is needed, i.e., one that covers fights with dogs, cocks etc.

Admittedly, 'animal fighting shows' or 'fighting animal shows' may not sound all that common or natural, but I'm not so sure how else it could be said if we include the word 'shows,' at least without also including words like 'wild' or 'beast,' neither of which would seem to apply in the context of domesticated animals.

Another option, which is probably the best option, might be "competitive animal fights."

Following Andy's comments, maybe something along the lines of, 'gruesome spectacles, [the legacy of ]...' is what the author is after. (?)

And if this is, indeed, the case, then other adjectives, including a few proposed by both Juan and José (in his agree) would work just fine.

That said, I'm still leaning towards 'competitive animal fighting/fights,' as I believe the author may be trying to underscore his point with a more generic, all-encompassing condemnation, following two (only) slightly more specific examples.

bestiales >>> gruesome, inhumane, brutal, and shocking

Se mata por deporte = Killing for sport: (game) hunting, bull fighting, [and other] gruesome spectacles/shows, circus-type legacies with gladiators

agree Manuel Aburto : I like "competitive animal fights"

Thanks, Manuel. I also like this one. I think dispensing with 'shows' is a good approach. 'Competitive animal fights' sounds very natural, as the references regarding a couple of state legislatures clearly suggest.
neutral philgoddard : The trouble is you've already said bullfighting.//You're saying bullfighting and animal fighting. Bulls are animals.

neutral Yvonne Gallagher : Overtranslation. How do you know these are fights or competitive? These days enlightened people see all animal "shows" as cruel and sadistic humans have many ways of torturing animals for "sport" or "fun".

blood sports

I believe the use of ¨espectáculos bestiales¨is meant to embrace all activities involving the killing of animals for fun, as explained in the introduction to the sentence, before the colon.

¨A blood sport or bloodsport is a category of sport or entertainment that involves bloodshed.[1] Common examples of the former include combat sports such as cockfighting and dog fighting and some forms of hunting and fishing. Activities characterized as blood sports, but involving only human participants, include the Ancient Roman gladiatorial games.¨
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_sport

The term also chimes with the next statement about gladiators.¨Blood sports¨
in English applies only to animals these days, while the ¨official¨Spanish equivalent, ¨deportes sangrientos¨is not used in the same way:

animal baiting

Or more simply, baiting.

"During various periods of history and in different cultures around the world, various types of baiting, named for the species used, have been confirmed. These include badger-baiting, bear-baiting, bull-baiting, donkey-baiting, duck-baiting, hog-baiting, human-baiting, hyena-baiting, lion-baiting, monkey-baiting, rat-baiting, and wolf-baiting."
