Patients impaired by musician’s dystonia suffer from an array of negative emotions: on the one hand, a feeling of guilt that their own behaviour has played its part in bringing about their dystonia and on the other, feelings of shame caused by the artist’s shaken self-image, which leads them to disparaging thoughts about themselves. Furthermore, the patient can experience fear for their professional future, anger at the injustice of fate and frustration at unsuccessful attempts to find an expedient cure. All of these emotions increase stress levels and can lead to depression, discouragement and a feeling of futility and uselessness.
