The relevance of Machine Translation (MT) for translation service production contexts is touching the daily lives of translators and other language-related roles. We have seen a new flood of info during the past 2 years about statistical MT being the new generation of tools that obsolete the old generation. Is it really that new and innovative? Jeff brings his experience over 2 decades on all different types of MT engines, systems and software to help pinpoint the key points of what to ask about a proposed MT project or the choice of an MT system, and how to avoid getting caught in a dead-end project that wasn’t set up from the outset with an appropriate methodology in place for use of MT. He will address what is new, what is different, what appears to be different but really isn’t, and how to be careful in accepting or refusing to work on projects involving MT.

Jeff Allen has 2 decades of experience in many areas across the entire business life cycle (marketing, pre-sales, sales, account management, project/program management, product management, development, custom development, QA testing, TEP production, release management, deployment, customer support, customer maintenance bug fixing, professional services & consulting,, partner/customer training, ISO9001 Quality Management, Executive Management, Advisory boards) at several language services /software companies (Translations.com/TransPerfect/AlchemySoftware, SYSTRAN, Softissimo, MIT2, ELDA, Language Technologies Institute) and other (non-translation) software and engineering companies (Caterpillar, Mycom Intl, SAP, Business Objects, Cartesis).
