Schedule:This session ended at 13:55
Description:What happens to the data you send to Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, and other online machine translation services? How does this affect any NDAs or other agreements between translators and clients? What options exist to maintain privacy of data while using MT? In this session I will try to answer these questions by taking a look at several public online machine translation services and explaining their privacy policies in plain language, along with the practical implications for translators (also including factors like cost, technical difficulty, etc.). We will also take a look at several options that offer a range of privacy levels, including completely private systems that run on your own PC.

Attendees should gain a better idea of the practical implications of data privacy policies and options when it comes to the various machine translation systems accessible by translators. The primary goal will be to equip attendees to make informed decisions about machine translation technology when it comes to privacy.
Language(s):English
Speakers:Patrick Porter
Patrick began his career in the language industry in 1999. By the time he received a B.A. in linguistics in 2001, he had been translating website articles for a major financial news outlet for two years. His early translation work focused on financial and legal subject matter, and a strong interest in these areas led him to pursue postgraduate studies in law, after which he continued to work as a translator. The increasing importance of information technology in the language industry and the need to create innovative custom IT solutions have broadened his expertise into software development, natural language processing, and information retrieval. His translation work continues to revolve around financial, legal, and IT subject matter, often at the crossroads of these topics. Part of this work has involved implementing custom, private machine translation systems as a valuable reference resource in his translation workflow. His interests also include data privacy, intellectual property, and business/taxation issues related to independent service providers, bootstrapping entrepreneurs, and other small start-up ventures.
