Description:Develop your translation skills through this panel focussing on a comparative analysis of the main characteristics of the legal systems used in a variety of countries around the world. Resources to assist in researching terminology will also be discussed.

Speakers:Suzanne Deliscar — Moderator
Ms. Deliscar was called to the Ontario Bar in 2004. As principal of Suzanne E. Deliscar, Lawyer-Linguist, she focuses on matters involving both legal and language issues. Her practice was created through the combination of her language skills in French and Spanish and the practice of law in a variety of areas, including civil litigation, wills & estates, corporate/commercial, and family law.

Ms. Deliscar has extensive experience in the translation of a variety of legal documents. She has extensive experience in the translation of official documents, and has reviewed, analyzed and abstracted over 500 Spanish language contracts for a large multinational corporation. Ms. Deliscar is also experienced in providing document review in French.

Suzanne Deliscar is also the developer and presenter of over 13 popular translator training webinar programs in the areas of legal translation, official document translation, and marketing for translators and interpreters. She is also the founder of the Lawyer-Linguists Forum, an online community of lawyer-linguists which fosters discussion and exchange in an effort to improve awareness and growth of the profession.

Ms. Deliscar has been heavily involved in the community through her mission work in Haiti, as well as holding various positions locally, regionally, nationally and internationally within her church community. Ms. Deliscar has also hosted numerous “Ask the Lawyer” Days in banks and for community organizations.

    Veronika Wagner
    A lawyer translator with a freelance past and future, in between I have gathered extensive experience in a leading Hungarian LSP as an in-house translator, then business partner manager. Last year I conducted a survey on the quality of legal translations (from the perspective of lawyer translators/linguistic reviewers/lawyer buyers of legal translations/LSP project managers) and I hope you will be interested in my findings. My mission as a legal translator is to promote clear and understandable legal drafting, making things only as complicated as they are.
    Luciana Carvalho
    A lawyer by training, Luciana specializes in Contract Law. She holds an MA and a PhD in Linguistics from the University of São Paulo.

    Besides being a partner at at Vox Interpreters and Tradjuris - Law, Language & Culture. She is an interpreter and translator trainer at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUCSP), where she teaches legal translation at the undergraduate level in the Translation BA program. Luciana is also a former Alumni Association interpreting and translation instructor.

    Her main expertise is legal translation and court interpreting. She has extensive experience in interpreting counsel, prosecutors, judges, justices, and diplomats at legal conferences, meetings, negotiations, depositions, trials, arbitrations.

    She writes a weekly column on Legal English and Anglo-American Legal Culture a twww.Migalhas.com.br, and she is the author of "Inglês Jurídico: Tradução e Terminologia" (256 p.) ISBN 978-85-67695-00-6.
    Sandrine Alves
    Graduated in Law in France (with a M.Phil on comparative & european law) and in Portugal, Sandrine Alves is a bilingual Portuguese lawyer since 2002 and a translator/interpreter since 1999, for courts, firms, translation agencies and public institutions. She is also a legal translation trainer (webinars & seminars). Fully committed with the legal status of the translator’s profession in Portugal, Sandrine has founded, together with six other professional translators, the first Portuguese professional translators and interpreters association, APTRAD, having been appointed as Chairman of the Supervisory Board.
