Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jul 20, 2005:
The more I look, the more confused I get ;o). According to Wiki and others:
short block = bare engine including the block, crankshaft, and pistons, but not including the HEAD, manifold ...
long block = bare engine including the block, HEAD, valves, crankshaft, camshaft, and pistons, but not manifold ...

Rumpfmotor = block, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods and bearings, and HEAD

Doesn't that make a Rumpfmotor a "long block"?

Support also comes from the Verband der Motoreninstandsetzungsbetriebe e.V. at:
http://www.vmi-ev.de/aktuelles.htm
where they try to clear up descrepancies in engine designations:
" 2.2.2. Umfang der Lieferung
1. Komplettmotor
Weitere Bauteile knnen fehlen."
So a Rumpfmotor isn't a short block?!
As also seen here:
http://www.nfz-werkstatt.de/home/nfz_katalog/motor.pdf

But I'm also seeing alot of Rumpfmotor being translated as short block...

Any comments? Help?

SwissTell: Thanks for the fast reply. I did see this at LEO but was hoping for something a bit more succinct and direct, since there is not much space for it in the document

bare engine

AFAIK this would be a complete engine without add-ons such as alternator and turbo
a short engine on the other hand is a motorblock fitted with pistons and rings, cam bearings, crankshaft and bearings.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks. That's they way I see it too. A Rumpfmotor is more than a short block/engine."

short engine

"the old engine plant at Chemnitz has so far been used for production of the EA 111 (1,05/1,3 l) Polo short engine (Rumpfmotor)."

"When building up a short engine to a complete assembly, it is essential to thoroughly examine every part you intend to reuse. We recommend that you pay special attention to the camshaft, followers, pushrods & rocker gear, checking carefully for signs of wear; reusing worn parts is false economy and you risk contaminating your new engine with abrasive particles."

"Short engines are sold on an exchange basis (except certain new short engines). The old unit must be a suitable type (1980 onwards) otherwise a surcharge will apply."
