That is what it is called in the US. It is composed of both the worker's share and what would be the employer's share of social security and medicare. It is approx. 15% of net income.

: That's what I would have said, but I just now read Maria Luisa's explanation, and she convinced me that it's more than just a social security tax; it's a different tax rate for small taxpayers with independent businesses.

Perhaps, but I think this equates with independent contractors providing services and not businesses as the term is understood.
