Il capitolo relativo ai chiodi riveste un'importanza pari solo a quello sul pareggio dell'unghia tuttavia a differenza di questo, per i chiodi esistono regole semplici delle quali anche i proprietari possono avvalersi.
I chiodi possono essere infissi in due modi: a " grasso" e a "magro". Nel primo caso essi sono più vicini alle lamine sensitive dello zoccolo mentre nel secondo sono più superficiali. Nella prassi, l'infissione a grasso dei chiodi è prerogativa di maniscalchi esperti.
I chiodi si dividono in testa, colletto, fusto e bisello; quest'ultimo rappresenta la punta con la classica smussatura della faccia interna. Esistono chiodi di diverse misure e calibri.
Infine la forma della testa varia in funzione del tipo di chiodo: da corsa, da ghiaccio, da quarter, a testa diamantata e così via.
