maribondo

This is a gloss without any further information. The only Maribondo I've heard of is some location (city/province?) of Brazil. Surely, given the nature of this text (a linguistics research document dealing with an indigenous tribe), this is more likely something different.
Any ideas?

wasp (typo?)
Could it be a typo? Maybe it's supposed to be "marimbondo"

Comment: "Or perhaps regional spelling? Who knows. Thanks!"

moribundo
As in "moribund", particularly as it involves an indig. tribe in Brazil.

Portuguese term (edited):
marimbondo
wasp
First, a possible misspelling: mariMbondo (PT syn. : vespa).
The translation is usually a wasp, and there are several marimbondo-XXX names for other specific insects.
There are geographic places, such as:
http://www.marimbondo.com.br/index3.htm
And IF THERE IS NO SPELLING MISTAKE (if it's really Maribondo):
http://www.interlegis.gov.br/comunidade/casas_legislativas/m...
as well as a dance:
http://www.terrabrasileira.net/folclore/regioes/5ritmos/mari...
and an electric power plant:
http://web.worldbank.org/external/projects/main?pagePK=64283...
(with another spelling mistake in the title, "Mirimbondo")
I hope this helps, at least after the possible spelling correction, IF it's the case!

: Yes, indeed. Aurélio points out that in popular use the term refers to any wasp, but technically speaking only certain wasps are in fact "marimbondos". BTW, "maribondo" is also fine, according to Aurélio.

Wasp
Possibly, the author is making reference to an insect of the wasp family.
By the way, the variant 'marimbondo' is the preferred Portuguese spelling.
The scientific name of such an insect would be required for an accurate designation in English.
Please, see the site below.
