French term

racé

French to English Other Wine / Oenology / Viticulture Wine
Used to describe Riesling wine:

Peer comment(s):

agree Marcus Malabad : yes! Having distinctive piquancy, as racy wine. It was first applied to wine, and, according to Cowley, comes to us from the Spanish and Portuguese raiz (root), meaning having a radical or distinct flavour; but probably it is a corruption of “relishy”

thanks
neutral Lise Boismenu, B.Sc. -

I'm sorry but I read many books (all over the centuries) and saw this expression. Don't forget it's it about old texts. Look at google....
agree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : Racy, yes...

disagree Steven Geller : It means a "distinguished wine" - "a racy wine" that is delicately fruity ? defies logic.

agree Yolanda Broad : I just ran a Google search with "racy," "distinguished," "classy" & "elegant" "Elegant" is the only one that gets a lot of hits. I also tried "distinctive," but find such phrases as "distinctive taste of tomato"... Does not equal "racé"!

distinctive/having distinction/with distinction

PETIT ROBERT

"qui a une distinction, une elegance naturelle"

this is normally used to describe "personne" but nowadays, in my opinion, is acceptable
Peer comment(s):

agree Lise Boismenu, B.Sc.
