French term

relation paternelle particuliere

Non-PRO French to English Medical Medical (general) Emotional support
This is from a handwritten report from a health professional giving support to a patient suffering from polytrauma following a road traffic accident.

Themes/Réactions:

Histoire de Vie: Relation paternelle particuliere. Mere décedée lorsqu'elle avait 4 ans; accident.

Préoccupations pour la chirurgie prévue pour demain.

Humeur anxieuse.

Does it mean that she had a special relationship with her father?

Thank you for any help/advice.

Discussion

liz askew (asker) Mar 22, 2007:
Hello Emma, Yes this did occur to me later on yesterday. "Peculiar".
Emma Paulay Mar 21, 2007:
Hi, I under it doesn't matter but I just have to say I think Manu's right in that this word often has negative connotations, as does "spécial". Here, it probably means something more like "peculiar".
liz askew (asker) Mar 21, 2007:
For the record: I have 30,000 words to translate here, and "particuliere" comes up just the once. I don't think it is worth worrying about, particularly as this translation is not a psychiatric/psychology report! And, to put it bluntly, the solicitors reading this translation (insurance claim following a RTA) will probably not even notice it!
Drmanu49 Mar 20, 2007:
I have read the refs and it was just to show that the expression is used. as in "who has a particular relationship to her brothers' children".
But it is "particularly close" which I find wrong.
Dr Sue Levy (X) Mar 20, 2007:
Also Manu, you would do well to actually read the refs you give - in several, "particular" is used in the sense of "this relationship we're talking about" or a "given relationship".
Dr Sue Levy (X) Mar 20, 2007:
I'm agreeing with "special" which doesn't mean good or bad. "Particular relationship" is just not idiomatic to my ear. Given the context though, if the relationship WAS bad, I would expect the person writing the report to have said so.
Drmanu49 Mar 20, 2007:
Once again I totally disagree with Sheila (and Sue if she goes that way). Unless you have more context, the relationship could be bad. She could blame her father for her mother's death etc.
liz askew (asker) Mar 20, 2007:
Thank you!
Dr Sue Levy (X) Mar 20, 2007:
yes, special relationship

Thank you Vicky.
neutral Sheila Wilson : I'm not sure that you can use particular in this way in English - it smacks of a faux-ami usage to me // Most of the hits mean specific or peculiar

Not really, lots of Ghits (see my refs), but I also mentioned special as suggested by Sue. I still prefer particular.
