English term

non-transferable registration mark

English Law/Patents Automotive / Cars & Trucks Vehicle Registration Certificate
could anybody please explain what it means if the registration certificate says the mark is non transferable? Is it just that the current mark cannot be used on another vehicle or what?

Vehicles having a V5C stamped "Non-transferrable registration mark" cannot donate their registration number , they can however receive a personalised number plate. Found at http://www.northumbria-numbers.co.uk/transfers.htm

when the car ownership is transferred, the registration mark doesn't

It means, that the registered owner of the car, who is selling, has the right to the registration mark. It usually happens when it is a "personalised" or "cherished" reg. mark, and the owner paid for the right to retain it, so he/she can use it as long as he/she wishes on future cars they own.

So the registration mark can be used on another vehicle by the owner of the registration mark, but if the owner sells the original car bearing this mark, the mark is not going with it, and the car will need a new reg. mark.

There are several UK websites referrint to that, usually from the buyer's point of view.

Yes

Although this is Brit, at this link, I find:

"Registration numbers are assigned to vehicles."

This would tell me that if I sell or somehow dispose of the vehicle, the number {probably} should be returned to the 'DVLA' office or the original owner is to keep it (not sure which). You can read all about transferring it, etc.

In California, the license plate stays with the vehicle UNLESS you have a personalized plate, so a personalized plate number would be 'non transferrable.'
