This is the solution I usually use. You're talking about transferring a signal to the CAN bus, which will then be available to other devices connected to the bus. For instance, a temperature sensor would transfer the temp. reading to the CAN bus; this signal would then be read in by let's say the temperature control for the passenger compartment and used to control the temperature.
