French term

bandagisterie

French to English Medical Medical (general) Medical supplies
Hi,
I am translating a website for a medical service company in Belgium and I am stuck with this word - it is not available in any of my dictionaries.

Société familiale de bandagisterie héritière d’une longue tradition de services à la clientèle

Thanks for your help.

Note from asker:
Thanks, though I am retaining the French as well since this is definitely specific to Belgium. However, there was a list of bandagistes agrées within this company which showed that bandagiste is different from bandagisterie. A finer search led me to orthopaedic technician but I couldn't understand what they had to do with incontinence supplies! So I have bandagisterie - medical equipment supplier and bandagiste - orthopaedic technician and I am not at all sure about the latter. I would invite mediamatrix to comment on this since he has lived in Belgium.
Peer comment(s):

agree Jennifer Levey : Yes, a 'bandagisterie' in Belgium sells all sorts of medical appliances from bedpans through lumbar supports to wheelchairs.

Thank you!
agree Noni Gilbert Riley : Ah, mediamatrix confirms in situ - yes, medical supplies sounds a lot safer!

truss makers

" orthopaedic technician/surgical truss maker (`mécanicien orthopésiste/bandagiste'), " www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1996/Uksi_19962374_en_10.htm - may well be a useful site for you with lots of Eureopan equivalents

Have given a low rating because the term sounds so hopelessly old fashioned. I'm sure another Prozian will provide the modern/PC version!

Note from asker:
I can't but help laughing at your answer. It has been a pretty long day too for me and it is already the next day here.
Sorry for that pathetic English there, I am too sleepy now. What I meant was I can't help but laugh :-)

i think this might be a dutch word (or primarily used in the dutch part of belgium) that is also used in belgian french as well given that dutch is also one of the official languages there. the majority of the websites that i found to use this word were either belgian (primarily in dutch) or dutch (from the netherlands). this might be why it has been so difficult to track the meaning of the word.
