Spanish term

frágiles (in this context)

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) Microcredit
I´m looking for an alternative to 'fragile' here.

Discussion

Lisa McCarthy (asker) Sep 12, 2008:
I initially thought of ´vulnerable´too but I´m not too sure it fits here. Vulnerable, from what I understand, means women, children, those who are ill, abused, refugees etc, but this text is about Microcredit and it generally talks about those who are in a weak economic situation, and are therefore provided with Microcredits.

disadvantaged (in this context)

I realise it's often used for socially disadvantaged groups but perhaps could be extended to financial aspects?

vulnerable

The definition of vulnerable groups varies between countries, but amongst the most important defining characteristics are age, sex, ethnicity and location. But also important are people with disabilities and stigmatised illnesses, such as mental ill-health. In areas facing war or civil conflicts displaced people and refugees form an important vulnerable group. This section presents some ways that vulnerable groups are defined and how health systems have been adapted to meet their needs.

Exactly, vulnerable includes women, disabled people, people living in poverty, which these microcredits are aimed at helping.

Does Microcredit Reach the Poor and Vulnerable? Evidence from Northern Bangladesh
Subsidized loans have a history of being diverted to the rich. Yet recently microcredit programs, such as the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, have become popular among donors and governments as a way to channel funds to the poor. This paper uses a unique panel dataset from two Bangladeshi villages to test if the modern microcredit movement is different from its predecessors. Poverty is measured by levels of consumption. Vulnerability is measured as fluctuations in consumption associated with inefficient risk sharing. We find that subsidized credit is largely successful at reaching the poor and vulnerable. The probability that a microcredit member is below the poverty line is substantially higher than that of a randomly picked household in both villages. In the village where female headed households were found to be vulnerable, nearly half of the female headed households belonged to microcredit programs yet only a quarter of male headed households were microcredit members. While restricting loans to the landless is not effective in reaching the poor and vulnerable, targeting female headed households is.

Must be an OK option then :-)

Not necessarily in developing countries. But I agree with you, vulnerable covers a lot of different people these days.

exposed, unprotected, susceptible

I'd really have to have read more context to know whether the "danger" is know (mentioned) in which case "susceptible" may be the best bet. Hope I helped.
