English term

over runs

English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
Company sales in October were much lower than budget, this result being heavily impacted by the loss of a very large contract in Mumbai, due to over runs by another contracting company.

What is the meaning of over runs?
Change log

Nov 25, 2008 15:31: NGK changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (1): Mariusz Stepien

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Gary D Nov 25, 2008:
If the contracted company was supplier contracted to the said company, then over-runs would mean over runs on time, took too long. but the sentence has split the two companies as being different and a competitor by stating "ANOTHER" Debrit's answer is ok
Gary D Nov 25, 2008:
due to over runs by another contracting company. This would be correct if the contracted company was contracted to the Mumbai company and not the company in Question. continued below....
Gary D Nov 25, 2008:
An over run caused the loss of a contract, The another company had an over run on a product, (Made Too many) rather than throw it away they off-loaded them to the Mumbai company very cheap, therefore the company didn't need to buy elsewhere.

late delivery

To me the term 'over run' here means to go past an agreed date (of delivery for example). Perhaps they were relying on the other contractor to deliver something to them and it was late arriving thus causing them to lose the contract.

defeated by another company

The company was defeated by its competitor and the business or contract was won over by them.

excess or surplus of produced goods

In the context given, I presume that 'over-runs' means that another contractor produced a surplus of ordered goods, and that the company reporting their sales suffered a cancellation of their order because the customer chose to buy the excess goods (perhaps at a discount?) from that company.

Alternately, OVERRUNS can also mean that a project went over the projected budget and cost, causing a 'cost overrun' - with more context, the meaning may become more clear.

Example of cost overrun statement:

"By facilitating proven best practices in production and manufacturing, the software helps you to anticipate demand, increase the accuracy of your bill of materials, optimize resource allocation, increase throughput, decrease cost over-runs, reduce inventory storage costs and improve your cash flow."

Thank you, Mariusz.
agree Gary D : Over runs are from an over production of a line of a product. see explanation above

Thank you, Gary - I am thinking that it may mean 'cost overrun', but then the text should have stated it with the use of 'cost'. These are the only options I could support.
