French term

ampleur des économies

French to English Social Sciences Finance (general)
In an article about the innovation and perfomrance in the banking industry:

La banque universelle est plus incitée à s’engager dans l’activité de crédit plutôt que dans celle de marché et, d’autre part, que la constitution de la banque universelle est motivée par l’ampleur des économies.

I'm not sure how best to translate this phrase. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion

Germaine A Hoston (asker) Mar 26, 2009:
economies or savings well, it's not national economies, so my question is whether it is savings or something else. Thanks!
Bourth (X) Mar 26, 2009:
Any idea if "économies" here is "economies" (national economies), or "savings"?

the scale (of savings/economies)

though may depend on the answer to Bourth's question
Peer comment(s):

agree Alain P. : here "economies" means "savings" clearly as retail banking relies on people savings

the economy of scale

this is what it is commonly called in English
Peer comment(s):

neutral Bourth (X) : I thought that was "économie d'échelle" ...

disagree Alain P. : that means "économies d'échelle" in french

neutral rkillings : "economies [pl.] of scale" could well be what the writer meant, although universal banks are generally thought to be better explained by economies of scope.
