салонная безмятежность

Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Женская красота, чувственность, нежная грусть, почти салонная безмятежность его работ уводила мечту в далекое прошлое классического искусства ко временам, когда мир не взрывался ежеминутно и не деформировал наш душевный строй

Simon Hollingsworth (asker) Apr 24, 2009:
Thank you, Michael Thanks for the note, Michael. This term came from a passage on the Russian Avant-Garde movement, involving passages on a number of artists, including Tatlin, Malevich and Kandinsky. The author of the piece often got lost in what I call 'arty-farty' language for the sake of sounding intelligent and words were often used without, I think, a clear understanding of their meaning. I am grateful for your input. By the way, what do you mean by 'dendism', a word I cannot find in my dictionaries?
Michael Korovkin Apr 24, 2009:
I would like to ask YOU a question, Simon: "Right" as elegant serenity might sound to you, does it sound, to you, as having to it a trace of sarcasm, almost an air of negative appreciation of the posture? Well, салонная безмятежность is supposed to. "Elegant serenity", to me, sounds like an altogether positive, in fact enviable, attitude: Салонная безмятежность, on the other hand, is far from that: it smacks of a two-bit dendism, thoughtlessness and the lack of ancorage in reality – all the things "elegant serenity" is not. Who is the painter, by the way? Sounds dreadful – amlmost as silly as the text.

salon serenity

Salon так и переводится, и тут именно имеется ввиду худ. салон. serenity
вполне подходит для описания душевного состояния, хотя имеются также другие синонимы как tranquility, placidity

somewhat posed serenity of his work

Ok, I am not sure if this is what the author actually means, or if this sounds all that great in English.

I have a feeling that the writer is trying to say that the women portrayed in the paintings are serene and sensual, but all of this is not entirely natural, the women are like life-drawing models (hence - cалон, which I interpret as a sort of art workshop, studio), posing for the artist "emotionlessly", serenly.

Maybe I got it completely wrong, but I don't think a literal translation will do the trick!

the solace of regal chamber

"regal" - дворянский, "chamber"- камерный, салонный,"solace" - уединённая созерцательность. В данном предложении "салонная" - имеется ввиду не только тэт-а-тэт среди золота и пурпура, но одновременно и сама салонная живопись, часто являющаяся как бы продолжением интерьера в который её поместили - своеобразная игра вкусов прошлых времён. Очень часто по этой причине и пейзажи также напоминают декорацию, намеренно написанные "салонно".

I would rather delete this "почти" from the sentence, it works in Russian version giving it some subtlety but it will jamble up English translation.

parlour-like placidity

I get this image of peace and tranquility of a 19-th century parlour somewhere in Nice or perhaps Lausanne, far removed from the turmoil of the real world. Just an idea :)
