According to the client, Tony was right - they said it was "CE plate". Thanks to everyone who contributed to this query.

You may well be right, Tony. "Professionally", I've only come across it in respect of concrete products, and in my private life in respect of children's toys with non-pull-out eyes and latex, leathergoods, and enema pumps guaranteed to withstand serious abuse, and in all cases it's CE marking on the packaging or a glued-on label.

'plaque' You may well be right, of course, Alex, but I can't help feeling there is a simpler explanation; although certain smaller items just have to carry a printed CE mark or even a stick-on label (and as you so rightly say, that's referred to as 'marquage'), there are certain other (usually larger) items that must carry an actual 'identification plate' of some kind. I have specifically encountered this in the context of pleasure craft, but have also come across it sporadically in other widely different fields too.

Just one example:

Marquage? I'd have thought "CE marking" and "marquage CE" would have been too consecrated a term, and too heavily embroiled in standards and regulations for there to be a chance of anyone getting the wrong word in there ....
What sort of products are you dealing with? Any chance it involves weld overlaying?

CE marking

Since "placage" (or sometimes "plaquage") means to face or veneer, I suspect this is referring to the need to apply labels to the product indicating that it is CE qualified. I doubt whether this has anything to do with the alternative meaning in rugby.

agree Tony M : I think it actually relates to the literal fixing of CE 'plates' carrying certain mandatory information. Like vehicle identification plates etc.
