French term

dispositif de tenue aux ondes de pression

French to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping guide to writing manuals for train equipment
This term appears as shown, in a list under CLIMATISATION MOTRICE ET REMORQUE. No further context is provided. I've worked it out to a device that maintains something using pressure waves, but I don't know what it maintains. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Yes, I guess you must be right - my idea would be pretty far-out for train technology :)
Tony M Nov 5, 2009:
Not so sure about that... I don't think your suggestion of "a device that maintains something using pressure waves" is quite right — I don't believe there's any suggestion of 'using' here.

'tenue à...' usually means 'ability to withstand...', and I think what you have here is probably a device to enable [something else] to withstand pressure waves (maybe the sort of thing that occurs when a train enters a tunnel, for example?)

pressure wave proofing/protection/valve system

In order to protect the passengers against the aerodynamic compressive impacts occurring in tunnels PRESSURE WAVE VALVES and pressure protecting fans are integrated into the supply and exhaust air ducts of the air-conditioning system.

PRESSURE PROTECTION SYSTEM
The PRESSURE-WAVE VALVES close the openings in a fraction of a second and have two tasks:
• First, they prevent pressure waves from entering the train (pressure waves occur when two trains meet each other and when trains enter tunnels at high speed). This system avoids a sudden pressure rise inside the train, which can be an unpleasant experience for passengers.
• Second, they close all the intake and outlet openings in the event of smoke appearing outside the train.

pressure wave stabilizer

I'm inclined to agree with Tony's comments in the discussion box - this probably concerns the stabilization/regulation of the A/C system in the presence of the pressure waves that occur when a train (especially a high-speed train) enters/leaves a tunnel. Lots of webrefs such as these:
