Comment: "Thanks. I chose this answer as it sounds most natural in British English. The text didn't seem to put the emphasis on the haircut so much, so I didn't want to use a very descriptive translation such as "short trimmed hair" and I think that "crewcut" has slightly negative connotations as "skinhead" does in the UK. The most simple answer was best here for the context. Thank-you everybody."

ok, it's not their actual heads that are cropped, but it actually means "with their hair cropped close into their heads"
crewcuts actually implies a style; these just seem to be urchins with no.1 cuts all round
