Spanish term

por merced que se le otorgó

Spanish to English Art/Literary History
I'm completely lost with this sentence:

Y en otro ejemplo, en 1595 Gonzalo López Músico por merced que se le otorgó, de un sitio de estancia para ganado mayor funda la Hacienda de la Angostura, Zacatecas con un obraje, del cual habría de surgir la comunidad de Villa García, reconocida hasta hace algunos años por sus tejedores.

gosh so far I've found a couple of subordinate clauses, but as yet no main verb! Am I going blind? Good luck with this one !

thanks to having been granted

Not a very good turn of phrase, but my take is: He was granted the 'estancia' and thanks to this started the 'hacienda' which included an 'obraje', from which Villa García was born

Peer comment(s):

agree Carol Gullidge : or words to this effect!//yes, I always think that the final tweaking is up to the Asker. And as you say, Patricia is more than capable of that. What we provide is the basic ingredients... At least that's all I'm looking for when I post questions

Thanks, Carol. The ones I chose are not too effective, but Patricia's good at fixing that!

was granted a favour

Oxford : ortogar un merced : grant a favour
You might be able to turn the sentence around so it reads:

was granted a favour

due to a favour granted to him/bestowed on him
through a favour granted to him/bestowed on him

I ask myself if that "de" is "of" or dar/give ...

Note from asker:
Un abrazote, Carol!! Why didn't I think to search? Actually, the Hacienda is misnamed here, too. It's really Agostadero. I just posted in the other question my solution: he was granted a [royal] in the form of a large cattle ranch, on which he founded the Hacienda ...
ooops! I meant [royal] favor ...
