English term

discharge of their duties

English Law/Patents Law (general) statutes
I'm translating the Statutes of an international centre (research) where, among other things, the duties of its Director are set out. I'm a little bit unsure about the term "discharge his duties", "in the discharge of their duties" as used in the following sentences:

Each Member undertakes to respect the international character of the responsibilities of the director and the staff, and not to seek to influence them *in the discharge of their duties*.

The Director shall discharge the following duties:
a) he shall direct the work of the Centre ...

Can "discharge" also mean "exercise"? If not, I think these sentences don't make sense. Thank you for your help!

It was tongue in cheek, Jenni. I know well that there are Positive personalities and others. To go out of one's way to criticise is a waste of joyous life. So I was 90% sure that yours was only a slip. Of a thing.

I can't believe that I wrote that. Where was my mind? I meant to say USEFUL, not useless! I'm glad that you made a comment, otherwise I would never have realized my crass error. A million apologies!!! The list is very good!
Jack Dunwell Feb 26, 2010:
Sorry you think that, J!! But I forgive you! !
Jenni Lukac (X) Feb 26, 2010:
I think that fourth has given you a very useless list of synonyms.

also used on certificates as standard phrase, "Student discharged his/her examination duties" i.e. the students fulfilled their requirements (to satisfactorily pass the exam).

@all Thank's a lot! Stupid me: When reading "discharge", the first meaning that came to my mind was "disburden" or "unload". Now it makes perfect sense, of course.
Jack Dunwell Feb 26, 2010:
Yes, Execution, exercise, fulfillment, performance
