L'air du temps

French to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
Cependant j’aime dans les deux le fait que ce sont des pratiques en phase avec leur temps, elles permettent d’exprimer de façon très juste plus que l’air du temps.

(interview d'une galeriste)
Je pense que le sens ici est que les 2 pratiques (art numérique et street art) permettent de laisser une trace, de saisir l'instant T et d'en garder un souvenir.

Discussion

I like Gilla's Zeitgeist, but I also think you could get away with leaving this in French - most educated readers would be able to work out what it means, and it has a whiff of exoticism.

the zeitgeist

Not sure why, but we often resort to the German word to express this idea in English.

neutral writeaway : only if air means the same thing as esprit. I don't think it's the same as Zeitgeist

thanks for your comment and I respect your opinion, but in my experience this is the expression we use in the UK in very much the same way that L'air du temps is used in France.

disagree Najib Aloui : there is a strong pejorative connotation in "l'air du temps". It's a passing collective feeling, like a light vapor. Unlike "zeitgeist" which means the "spirit", the "mind" of a whole epoch.

except that "zeitgeist" is very frequently used in English these days in a very similar way to "l'air du temps", particularly in journalism.

a contemporary feel

agree with polyglot about 'contemporaneity', the 'here & now'. The sentence is missing something - it does not say WHAT these art forms convey so accurately. You could perhaps get round it by saying that they 'depict/reflect more than a contemporary feel'
