I find this quite interesting indeed, and certainly you make a point. I don’t know if the audience is British, Australian, Canadian, US etc. etc., but certainly you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand this word…….I wouldn’t wish to be presenting myself as ‘elitist’ in that the average Joe cannot grasp the word ‘commencement’, because I think that they do, even those damned former immigrants such as myself (ha ha). For me ‘start’ was my first choice, but it is generally concepts one should fear, not simple words……………I think. Still, if you think of ‘dumbing down’, others may think of ‘smarting up’, certainly a worthwhile endeavor, (or endevour) should you think of ‘them’ that way….I also think that we are but humble servants as far as a language is concerned.....humble servants to both languages.....

here's my perhaps overwhelmingly trivial point...I'm not scared of the big bad three-syllable word commencement, but at least Stateside there is an ongoing trend of simplification in government and other kinds of forms. Commencement is a beautiful word, Lenka Wolf's phrase has far more Google hits...
But certain elements of the general public, in light of many factors including immigrants with a weak command of the English language, just may not comprehend the word as much as "start". So the need in standardization is to cater to this a bit... Call it dumbing down, but the more people who successfully "get" what the meaning is thanks to simplifed (although completely accurate) words, the better and more effective will forms be completed. I'm not an advocate of "diluting" English, it's respecting diversity.

Dnem, který je sjednán v pracovní smlouvě jako den nástupu do práce, vzniká pracovní poměr, a tedy i všechna práva a povinnosti, které z něho ..
