Discussion

lingo_montreal Oct 1, 2010:
Jeffrey - "tike" - N. American spelling; "tyke" - UK. Personally, I prefer the commonly used "Tiny Tots", which is cute and neutral; "tikes/tykes" can be pejorative re. boorish behaviour. Also, the American toy company "Little Tikes" is often in the news re. product recalls, so maybe it's better to distance oneself from that name?...
jeffrey engberg (asker) Sep 30, 2010:
Little Tykes, Tiny Tots... The picture they use is a little boy, and not a squirrel.
So I will probably use Little Tykes...
Or would that be Tikes? Where would one use "tykes" verses "tikes", by the way? UK, US, Australia?
Egil Presttun Sep 30, 2010:

TINY TOTS

I'm not aware that it comes from a specific children's book or story. Tiny tots is how I'd translate it here

Or "Little Acorns" from the proverb
“From little acorns mighty oaks do grow”, if you do want to translate the term

There are a few kindergarten-type establishments in Ireland called "Little Acorns".
Peer comment(s):

agree lingo_montreal : Term used commonly in Canada and US for daycares (= barnehager) or daycare departments/age groups.

ITSY BITSY

Just another suggestion for confusion's sake.

Thinking that this embraces both the idea of cute litte ones (yes, I like spiders, and kids) - and the aspect of associating to a nursery rhyme.
