Russian term

живет, мол, не так

Russian to English Other Poetry & Literature
We are currently translating a series of short stories about Russian village people. This is one of them. The time of the story is not specified, but apparently simple English characteristic of country people is preferred.

Context:
"Старушка вдруг вспомнила историю про одного солдата, который во время ночного дежурства слышал женский плач и поверил, что встретил образ Божьей матери - она сокрушалась о молодом поколении. ***Живет, мол, не так***"

Thank you!

agree Barry Appleby : Yes, good idiomatic English

Thank you, Barry!
agree Rachel Douglas : With the simplest version: "They don't live right," or "They don't live right, he says" (for "мол"). Or, "she says," rather.

Like: they live in a wrong way

Or: "She says they live in a wrong way"

have a wrong way to live

I'd translate it like this, while МОЛ can be translated as /must have/ coz it suggests some certain level of confidence based on superstition (in our case).

So may be:

he must have had a wrong way to live

and as a result he sees the Mother of God as a sign to improve and start living better.

Yes, I must agree with you.
Note from asker:
Thank you for the answer! Actually, мол singles out represented speech, it means 'according to his words.'

disagree Barry Appleby : wrong way of living or way of life. a wrong ay to live is not idiomatic English
3 hrs
it's a colloquial language and your idiom erases its kick totally
agree LanaUK : It's the wrong way to live //http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=82303828396&topic=1032...

Thank U
disagree Rachel Douglas : "To have a wrong way to live" wdn't be said even colloquially. "Drinking all day long is a wrong way to live" (though more likely "the"), but not w "to have." / Sorry, disagree that it's "absolutely necessary" to write something absolutely not English.

It's absolutely necessary in this construction: he must have had a wrong way to live
