Spanish term

galerías

Is there a specific term for galerías here?

Thanks

Discussion

neilmac Mar 24, 2011:
Hereabouts it usually refers to balconies that look out onto the back courts of flats, often used for hanging clothes out to dry. If at the front of the house it's just a "balcon".
Paul Adie (X) Mar 24, 2011:
Balconies I was thinking balconies, but perhaps it would be best to get confirmation from the client. This may refer to something in particular. Just learned what a 'hórreo' is, thanks!

agree neilmac : En todas partes cuecen habas, aunque la frase me parece un pelín larga:)

Cierto. Quizá exista algo similar en las costas irlandesas o británicas. Gracias.

Thanks, Sheila.
agree Deborah Greenberg : I think I might shorten it to "glassed-in balconies", though.

cornices or balconies

Could be either one. Without seeing a picture I can't tell for sure.

A verandah or veranda is a roofed opened gallery or porch. It is also described as an open pillared gallery, generally roofed, built around a central structure. It is often partly enclosed by a railing and frequently extends across the front and sides of the structure.

I'd use "veranda" or "gallery" for a one-word version.

They allow air to circulate, which is why they are used for clothes drying in more humble abodes :)
