I would take the passive out of the rest of the sentence and say:

Although some [remaining] groups today, such as the Ba-Mbuti, [continue to/still] fragmentan los huesos de elefante con el objetivo de obtener tuétano, ésta no es una práctica habitual

Or "surviving indigenous cultures" if you want to be absolutely clear.
