Dutch term

plakvlieseline

Dutch to English Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion Quilt-making
A substance which can be used for coating fabric. Vlieseline, being a trade name, is untranslatable (although "vliese" by itself of course means "fleece"), but the stuff is sold in the English-speaking world, so there should in theory be an English equivalent for "plakvlieseline", though I've so far been unable to dig it up through Google
Proposed translations (English)

Discussion

Lianne van de Ven Apr 13, 2011:
@Timothy For generic use you would not describe the product as 'adhesive Vlieseline' but as iron-on-interlining (rather than fusible fleece, although that has more google hits and should not be missing on their site from SEO perspective)

writeaway Apr 13, 2011:
@Lianne Asker has already found it however. It's a prefix to several words. It would indeed mean adhesive in this context. What dictionary could I possible mean? Not Webster's English.....
Timothy Strauss (asker) Apr 13, 2011:
Since "plak" as a prefix usually has the sense "sticky/adhesive", how about "adhesive Vlieseline"?
Lianne van de Ven Apr 13, 2011:
@writeaway Looking for 'plak' would not yield any result in this context. Or are you referring to a particular dictionary?
writeaway Apr 13, 2011:
look up the words starting with plak in the dictionary. It's a compound word so looking up plak/plakken should make it clear.

fusible fleece

This would be an alternative to Kate's suggestion.

fabric stiffener

http://www.dwconline.com/DWC/May'97/GuestEditorial.html

Fabric stiffeners are easy to work with. They can be cut with scissors to any shape desired. For example, the top and bottom of the stiffener can be trimmed to follow the print on the fabric. The stiffeners are simply ironed to the back of the decorative fabric. Stiffeners that are coated on both sides are supplied with a silicon paper that prevents them from adhering to the table while the first layer of fabric is applied.

neutral Lianne van de Ven : I wonder about the correct use in your reference, Sindy. I know these as the powders to add to your laundry, and google images seems to confirm that.

"they can be cut with scissors, the top and bottom can be trimmed"...? And many examples for "iron-on fabric stiffeners' as well. Kate's answer is clearly the preferred answer, but please do your research before you post a comment like this...
