Discussion

jeffrey engberg May 2, 2011:
Looks like anyone can join the association! (Even students can become members. It doesn't seem to be an association limited to certified realtors.)

From the web site for becoming a member:
Bestått eiendomsmeglereksamen (karakterutskrift/vitnemål må vedlegges)
Eiendomsmegler med eiendomsmeglerbrev
Megler etter overgangsordningen med tillatelse fra Finanstilsynet
Jurist med tillatelse fra Finanstilsynet
Advokat som har stilt særskilt sikkerhet for å drive eiendomsmegling
Studenttilknyttet NEF på eiendomsmeglerstudiet

NEF/NAR Yes, I would also presume that to be a member of NEF, you must be a licensed real estate agent.

To be a member of NAR in the US, you must also be a licensed real estate agent. However, only members of the NAR may call themselves a Realtor since NAR holds its members to a certain set of standards with regards to continuing education, etc.

It may be that in order to practice real estate in Norway, you must be a member of NEF, and so there is no distinction.
jeffrey engberg May 2, 2011:
NEF I would suppose that any member of NAF is already a licensed realtor?
Signe Golly May 2, 2011:
Realtor/real estate agent If your target is US English, you may want to give some consideration to the use of the term 'Realtor' v. 'real estate agent.' When I was in real estate, some felt it was important to distinguish that we were licensed, trained Realtors, members of the NAR, as opposed to "just" real estate agents.

There seem to be a few variations used online this is the one used by CEPI, the European Council of Real Estate Profession and by Finanstilsynet.

agree Signe Golly : Sounds like that's the official translation.

neutral jeffrey engberg : I did not see any English link or name on their webpage. That is the problem here. They have not officially given their association an English name, or have they?

Norwegian Association of Estate Agents

I think the most correct term would be this if your target language is UK English.
Real Estate is an American term, is it not?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Christopher Schröder : FYI it's increasingly being used here in the UK too :-(
