Discussion

Michael Barnett Jul 15, 2011:
Ingelfinger BTW, that's Ingelfinger, not Lingenfelter. I was reviewing a patient's blood test at the time I posted the discussion, whose name was Lingenfelter.
Michael Barnett Jul 15, 2011:
@Anne I don't know why Liz felt the need to insert "spasmodic". Ordinarily croup is not spasmodic. The stridor results from swelling of the trachea. On inspiration, the negative intraluminal pressure causes the trachea to contract even more, further compromising the airway.
Anne Schulz Jul 15, 2011:
@Michael What about 'spasmodic'?
Michael Barnett Jul 15, 2011:
Stylistic comment Clain hit the diagnosis on the head with laryngotracheobronchitis, although that would render "laryngite sous-glottique" redundant and the condition is actually a laryngotracheitis. The street name is croup.

As a topic opener, I would translate "laryngite aigue striduleuse" as "acute laryngitis with stridor". The term stridulous grates on my English medical ear. It sounds like a translation or something written in native English prior to 1975. It is overly pedantic, pretentious, effete, arrogant if you will. We disciples of Franz Lingenfelter just hate words like that. ;-)
elizabeth_med (asker) Jul 14, 2011:
Acute croupous laryngitis What about acute croupous laryngitis (given in the Dorlands Medical Dictionary). Is this the same thing?
meirs Jul 14, 2011:
aiguë = acute I guess

acute laryngotracheobronchitis

Toux aboyante, raucité et stridor inspiratoire constituent un syndrome qui témoigne d'une obstruction des voies respiratoires supérieures. À l'âge pédiatrique et dans un contexte aigu, une laryngite sous-glottique est le plus souvent en cause.

Hoarseness, whooping cough and stridor are elements of a syndrome of upper airway obstruction. In childhood, acute laryngotracheobronchitis is by far the commonest cause of this syndrome.
