I believe this is used. Here's an example from "Early Russian Architecture" (Faensen, Ivanov):
"The church belongs basically to the Moscow type of middle-class, suburban church with two storeys, five domes..."

Actually that's a good example of why "suburbs" is so unsatisfactory a translation for посад, because "middle-class suburban" in its modern connotation is not what these settlements outside the city walls, dating back to Muscovy, were like. But in the case of this style of church, it's not too terrible.
