French term

qui se retranscrit sur LinkedIn ou Facebook

French to English Tech/Engineering Internet, e-Commerce social networking
Hi

Here is the sentence:

"Un réseau social c'est d'abord un 'social graph', cette empreinte digitale de nos relations aux autres qui se retranscrit sur LinkedIn ou Facebook."

That comes up on LI or FB?

Thanks!

Discussion

B D Finch Oct 24, 2011:
qui se retranscrit sur NB Not 'qui se retranscrit de', which is why it seems to be about something that exists elsewhere (even if only ontologically), before it is taken up and used by the social networking sites.

that is mapped onto ...

In the sense of something existing elsewhere being mapped onto these social networking sites.
Peer comment(s):

agree Helen Shiner : I think I would prefer 'as mapped out on LinkedIn'./I think the mapping out is important here, since it gives a sense of the interconnecting 'strands' of the network.

Thanks Helen. The reason I prefer "mapped onto" is that the snippet of source text provided seems to indicate that the "empreinte digitale" starts out somewhere other than Facebook and LinkedIn, however, it isn't very clear.

There are lots of ways you could translate this - take your pick.

I think 'social graph' might be an instance of a foreigner misusing an English phrase, and I'd be tempted to leave it out. You could say something like:

A social network is essentially a digital footprint of our relationships with others as expressed on LinkedIn or Facebook.
Note from asker:
Thanks Phil. Social graph is a bona fide term and concept. Tons of web pages, e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_graph http://www.internetactu.net/2007/09/28/comprendre-le-graphe-social/

Before the days of internet, but the same meaning:
"A copy below of the deeds of the divine Augustus, ... and of the money which he spent for the state and Roman people, INSCRIBED ON two bronze pillars, which are set up in Rome."
