The term crops up in an academic article on trade union history in a paragraph describing the sorts of support for workers provided by employers' organisations in the early decades of the 20th century. The sentence is as follows:
"Des organismes liés à l’UIMM sont parallèlement mis sur pied pour aider les adhérents dans des domaines divers : caisses d’assurances contre le chômage forcé - contre les grèves -, contre les accidents du travail, caisse des retraites, Association métallurgique et minière contre la tuberculose, **Caisse foncière de crédit**, Comité central des allocations familiales, Comité pour la formation professionnelle des jeunes chômeurs, etc".
I guess I need to translate the function - would something like "a land fund providing loans" be a suitable description? All help much appreciated.

This is the name of a now defunct banking institution. Note the French capitalize only the first noun in such cases, where English would use a capital letter on each of the nouns comprising the name. There is a tendancy towards capitalizing all which you might find is gaining ground. Never the less, the old rule still prevails largely. For this reason, it is easy to overlook a particular name.

Whether you decide to provide a gloss translation or not is of course your decision. I maintain my view that in terms of translation it would be an error to do so. I would not be happy if folk started calling me Nicole Lécossaise!
As I read the extract you have provided, the writer is consistent in his/her use of capitals, in so far as when referring to
- caisses d’assurances contre le chômage forcé, - contre les grèves -, contre les accidents du
travail
- caisse des retraites (should read in the plural, thus caisseS de retraite ?)
as there a number of different caisses.
The remaining organisms referred to are specific and their first letter has been capitalized :
- Association métallurgique et minière contre la tuberculose
- Caisse foncière de crédit
- Comité central des allocations familiales
- Comité pour la formation professionnelle des jeunes chômeurs, etc
You will not get one single result if you put « Caisse foncière de crédit » in the plural. There was only one of that name and it no longer exists.

| Thanks - I'm aware that it's a proper name but it will still require a gloss translation, whether in a footnote or not, particularly since it's in a list of similar bodies, some of which are proper names and others not. The author is not entirely consistent in her use of capitalisation, either, so I'm not sure whether this is THE CFC, i.e. the start of the bank you link to, or just one CFC among several, one of which became the now defunct bank. I guess only the author can answer that question. |

I'm no expert in this field, but the FR term seems to indicate a means of enabling employees to obtain housing/property loans, so thought this might help (50-83k Google search results).
Not sure if this would have been the term used in the early 1900s, though... otherwise, something along the lines of "...housing fund"?
Note: one must distinguish between a mortgage loan (on an existing property) and a home/housing loan (to obtain a property).

DOn't use credit union! A "Caisse Foncière" is NOT a credit union, in that it is NOT member owned, its state owned. Its a bank!
I also would NOT use Home Loan because "Foncière" is not only a reference to home property but also commercial real estate.
