French term

La Matrimoine

French to English Tech/Engineering Architecture
Target=uk

This is the title of an article that talks about unintrusive urban planning. For this you need to survey all the imperceptible elements that make up a territory's past. i.e. the imprints of an old farm, a spring that has been knocked down, a forgotten path, etc.
The author refers to these as ordinary and sometimes trivial elements which make up the inner matrix of a territory.

Obviously making a parallel to Patrimoine, he refers to this as Matrimoine.

I cannot think of a way to express this, since Matrimony, is obviously not possible.

Any ideas?

Discussion

Kate Collyer Jul 19, 2012:
Two possible avenues... 1) metaphor: use the 'sculpted' landscape to mirror the curves/contours/idiosyncracies of the female body (even laughter lines/stretch marks?)

2) wordplay: can anything be made of the matrix/dominatrix/mater (mother) similarities?
Miranda Joubioux (X) (asker) Jul 19, 2012:
I asked the client what to do with this one, since I was worried that the author was making a specifically 'feminine' reference. I have been told to leave the French and explain the parallel with Patrimoine in a footnote.
Many thanks for your suggestions. Helen really had some great ideas.

(Blissful History) Though perhaps the vomit induction level of the word is too high?

Heritage overlooked / Soft heritage / Our imperceptible heritage

Just a few suggestions without going down the feminist route exactly.

agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Hidden heritage? Forgotten heritage?

Thanks, Nikki; I like hidden heritage particularly, though it makes less of a reference to the status of women - at least, one would hope, in France! Still thinking about what would be the perfect solution...
agree Michele Lemaire : Discrete heritage http://www.etsav.upc.es/personals/iphs2004/pdf/abs/o_hare_da...

Thanks, Michele./I think the 'male' heritage, i.e. the obvious stand-out heritage, is referred to in your link as 'discrete', whereas the 'female', continuous, less determinate is said to be 'indiscrete'. A bit confusing, though.
