This comes from a brochure about an exhibit of some of the works of Picasso.

CONTEXT: "La muestra llega por primera vez a Sudamérica con más de 70 grabados y litografías que recogen las distintas técnicas y etapas de la producción del artista."

Is the "grabados" here engravings? Etchings? Prints? Something else?

Either way, I would be careful about calling them one thing or another unless you are sure (i.e. you can access a list of works or the client is able to inform you): the number of times I have questioned the use of "grabados" in my work only to find that they were sometimes referring to etchings, sometimes to engravings, other times to aquatint... And, of course, to all of those and more...

Prints and lithographs I've been working on a project involving prints for a couple of years now (Goya) and really this term causes headaches! Lithographs are also prints, so you could say "lithographs and other prints" but I wouldn't - I would stick with "lithographs and prints". Often a difference is made between lithographs and other kinds of print (woodcut, lino, etching, aquatint, etc.), perhaps because of the different chemicals traditionally used to "bite" into the surface or photographic techniques used in modern times (I tried a couple of the modern techniques back in my art student days but I have to say I don't have a wide experience of these techniques), even though lithographs are prints too. But since the writers want to mention the lithographs apart, I would simply use "lithographs and prints". Hope that helps - others may disagree with me, we'll see!

instinct makes me think this would be etchings - and if you google picasso + etchings, this seems more likely than engravings. I don't think the generic term prints would be right here, since lithographs are a type of prints.

If you cannot find our if these are etchings or engravings (two different techniques) or if various techniques were employed (this is likely: Picasso used a variety of print techniques) then you probably need to use "prints". Otherwise, just ask the client - if you can - whether these are engravings, etchings or a mixture.

Of course, there are many other techniques.... Even if you use "intaglio" (for prints) you may find that it doesn't cover everthing, since I do not think lino cuts, which Picasso used, for example, would come under intaglio since they do not use a metal plate, although others may disagree with me on that one.

agree Lucy Phillips : I think you're right, Kate - Picasso used a variety of techniques and it may well be that they include etchings, engravings and other types of prints. And the term "prints and lithographs" is used in the reference I've posted above.

Yes, thanks Lucy - I'll comment above, but you're right: often we say "prints and lithographs" although they're ALL printmaking techniques, really. But they obviously want to differentiate, so... :)
