Dutch term

systeemvermogen

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation LED verlichting
In een bestek voor LED verlichting staat: 'De aanbieder met het laagste systeemvermogen ontvangt 20 punten. Voor iedere Watt meer verbruik worden 2 punten afgetrokken.' Ik heb helaas niet veel benul hiervan.

Discussion

Manuel Maduro (asker) Aug 29, 2012:
Well, the value in the test does refer to individual LED fixtures, I think. Otherwise, It would be pretty mean of them to subtract points for each individual Watt, right? I hope this makes the whole thing a little easier.
Textpertise Aug 29, 2012:
Check your google hits carefully Try to discern whether each hit is talking about the LED lighting as a component or as a system (all assuming, of course, that your quote above relates to a system). So power rating would apply to an individual LED lighting fixture but if you have 20 such fixtures in your system, then the term that would apply would be system power usage or system power consumption.
Manuel Maduro (asker) Aug 29, 2012:
I really don't mean to be ungrateful for all your suggestions (thank you very much, by the way!), but when I google "power rating" with "LED fixtures" I still get many more hits as compared to "rated power consumption" and "system power usage". But I may be overlooking something.
Textpertise Aug 29, 2012:
Yes there is Power rating refers to a component of the system. Thus, you could have a transistor or a coil within the system that has a certain power rating. When speaking of the system as a whole, i.m.h.o. the term of choice is system power usage. I gave it a 4 because someone out there could possibly come up with some other term that would be better but really I could probably have given it a 5.
Manuel Maduro (asker) Aug 29, 2012:
What do you think about "power rating"? It's what I have been using so far. Is there a difference?

system power usage

Whatever arrangement they are quoting for, the tenderer who quotes for a system using the least electrical power gets the most points, with points deducted for every additional Watt.

In electrical and electronic engineering, the power rating of a device is a guideline set by the manufacturer as a maximum power to be used with that device. This limit is usually set somewhat lower than the level where the device will be damaged, to allow a margin of safety. Definition from: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_rating

Finding a straightforward web definition of system power usage/ consumption is not so easy, but have a look, for example, at this from IBM:

System Power Consumption
Disks are not the only component in a storage system that consumes power. A valid comparison must look at the system as a whole... The passage then goes on to discuss its system.

The above quotes are posted to support my assertion that the term power rating relates to a component of the system whereas system power usage or system power consumption relates to the system as a whole.

agree F Scott Ophof (X) : 'System' is indeed why a 5 would've been good.

Since I regard yours as a very knowledgeable opinion, I am very pleased that you agree.
agree Jack den Haan : Or indeed, as you mention later on, system power consumption.

Thank you Jack. Same comment as for F Scott. I seem to have the big guns on my side on this one!

rated power consumption

lowest rated power consumption
het gaat in deze context over het verbruik in watt bij verlichting?

dan is dit de juiste term denk ik
De bedoeling is dat het totale samengetelde vermogen dan zo laag mogelijk ligt.

I meant the rated power consumption of the system. Now I see usage has a different meaning than consumption in this context apparantly, so thank you to Textpertise for this explanation.

agree Alexander Schleber (X) : I like this best.

agree David Walker (X)

disagree Textpertise : rated power consumption is a term used of a component of a system but rarely applies when speaking of the whole system itself.

disagree F Scott Ophof (X) : As Textpertise says, 'rated' does not automagically imply the whole system.
