ventana

This is just a general question.
I was just wondering if anyone from Santo Domingo can answer this for me. I have a friend who is American but was brought up partly in the Dominican Republic. She insists that in the Dominican Republic people refer to a payment window as a "ventana" instead of a "ventanilla." We work together in a place where we must constantly direct Spanish-speaking people to go to the clerk's window either to check in or to make a payment. I cringe every time she says: "Vaya a la ventana." The "ventana" in question is a large piece of bullet-proof glass with a slot in the bottom in which to insert papers or money. I call this the "ventanilla," as I was taught.
Thanks for any input!
