@ Tony Interesting take that may well be true since the Asker was thinking of a possible Italian source for this text. That would indeed support Cyril's answer of multiple ideas, rather than my theory of sudden understanding, as in many pennies dropping.

@ Sheila I suspect it's not a missing word, but just a mis-translation: I reckon they're talking about the image of a person with a light-bulb above their head, but have mistakenly used 'on' for 'over' or 'above' (as in so many languages).

Typo I can't tell whether or not it's a translation from another language, but it would be quite normal to say in English "There are dozens of light bulbs on IN the head at a time". The "in" is missing from your text. My maths teacher used to say that she could see the light bulbs going on in her pupils' heads. I'm afraid I suffered from a lot of power cuts during her lessons :)

@ Cyril oui, tout à fait - "bla bla bla" - et ça y est, j'ai fait le lien avec l'expression "originale" qui est bel et bien en italien (dans le sens d'avoir une idée, une illumination).
