1.1 SYSTEM OVERVIEW AND BASIC THEORY OF OPERATION
The XXX is a high voltage machine used for the production of energetic electrons for industrial curing and processing. It provides a continuous beam of electrons over a large product processing area. A constant dose of radiation to the product is ensured by a control system that automatically adjusts the electron beam intensity to the speed of the product.

The electron gun contains an array of directly-heated tungsten wire Filaments. Each Filament is surrounded by a crescent-shaped Control Grid. Electrons are emitted from the heated Filaments and accelerated and directed by the High Voltage field through the Control Grids toward the planar Screen Grid, which redirects the electrons into a uniform beam perpendicular to the water-cooled Copper Window. The Copper Window supports the titanium Window Foil which allows the majority of the accelerated electrons to pass through the foil toward the product while maintaining the vacuum pressure in the Vacuum Chamber. Electrons that pass through the product are collected by a water-cooled Shield Roll or Beam Absorber.
