This term is found in a list of characteristics of chickens (Federkleid, Scharrtrieb, Fortpflanzungsfaehigkeit, Immunsystem) that are considered secondary in factory farming because they consume too much energy and are not wanted in a "genormte Umgebung"

Scharren is, of course, scratching, and all chickens scratch, but scratch drive or scratch impulse don't google well...

Any ideas?

scratching urge

Scratch grains, which blend various types of grains, can be fed as a daily treat to your flock, but they don't replace complete poultry feeds.
