Is the literal translation "active and passive interests" suitable here, or is there more than meets the eye? I'm not sure what's exactly meant.

@philgoddard. I am with you too. I don't see this as financial interest but as "property" interest/participation or "interesse attivo" and "Interesse Passivo". The IRS active and passive interest to determine how to tax a person.

I seem to be in a minority, but I'm not convinced that it means loan interest here. "Titolare...di interessi passivi" doesn't make sense.

I can see where the word interest can be a problem. But the translation is correct as it refers to how one participates in a business. Active interest or active participants are materially participating in the every day business. Those that are classified as passive activities would probably be classified as investors, bankers, and maybe suppliers depending on the definition of supplier.

interest income and expense

This is usually how I would translate this in financial terms, and it looks like it could apply here, i.e. the party in question will receive/incur all the interest income/expense that arises.
